Storyboard • “Language is woven into the fabric of instruction.” • Language is what we use to teach – speaking • Language is what we use to learn – reading& listening • Language is what our students use to demonstrate what they know - writing • TESOL Standard #1 • English language learners (ELLs) communicate for social, intercultural, and instructional purposes within the school setting.
Storyboard • Social andIntercultural language... • used in face-to-face interactions in a school setting. • necessary to participate in class • asking for directions or assistance • learning to follow rules and directions • understanding how and when to complete an assignment • often used during recess, in the hallways, and outside of school.
Storyboard • Instructional (academic) language • the language necessary for success in school • Receptive skills: listening and reading • Productive skills: speaking and writing • includes vocabulary and grammar • Everyday vocabulary can take on a whole new meaning in the classroom. • “table” periodic table multiplication tables water table

Storyboard • Language proficiency is dependent on both in and out – of - school experiences. • Simplify and support (with visuals, peers, L1 when appropriate) • Both social & academic language is necessary for academic success. • Academic language proficiency provides a path to academic success. • Content-based instruction helps develop academic language proficiency. • L1 academic proficiency facilitates the acquisition of academic English language proficiency.
