  1. Research Subcommittee Chairs’ Breakfast Annual Meeting 2012 – San AntonioJaapHogeling, Vice Chair, RACMonday,June 25, 2012

  2. Current & future projects • 19 new projects have been awarded • 28 projects were completed • There are currently 62 active projects of which 11 in a closing phase. • we have 6 conditionally approved TRPs possibly ready for bid this fall. • If RAC also want to fund a significant number of approved URPs we need to prioritize.

  3. ASHRAE Service to Research Award • Purpose • recognize individual for excellence in volunteer service related to Society research • Eligibility • ASHRAE members who have demonstrated exceptional research service (planning, proposal evaluation, project monitoring and/or utilization of project results) • Not open to current TC chairs or RAC/TAC members • Nomination by TC/TG chair of a voting or corresponding member by September 30

  4. GRANTS-IN-AID • A letter announcing the availability of ASHRAE Grants-In-Aid for Graduate students will be sent to over three hundred colleges in October 2012. • last year we had 65 applicants for a grant, The applications will be evaluated by the RAC during the winter meeting.

  5. IRG: Innovative Research Grants • This spring 5 proposal have been reviewed. • Sadly we had to decline all proposals because: • Not considered to be innovative • Not new work but just a contribution to on-going projects • To much product development oriented • Limited value for the Ashrae community

IRG: Innovative Research Grants • RAC is reviewing the current IRG procedure, we expect to publish a renewed call and guidance by 11-2012 • Proposals will be reviewed at the winter meeting • It should be “out of the box” proposals for new research • No direct connection to current activities of TC’s is expected • Expected value for the Ashrae community is paramount • No product development

Work StatementsAnnual meeting 2012 • RAC reviewed four work statements and three were conditionally accepted, and one was returned with comments. • The conditionally accepted work statements will be released for bid once the responsible Research Liaison is satisfied that all approval conditions have been satisfied by the TC/TG or SSPC and after funding becomes available.

RTAR’s Annual meeting 2012 • RAC reviewed five RTARs for addition to the Society’s Research Implementation Plan • 3 were conditionally accepted, • 1 was returned, • 1 was rejected. • All RTARs that were reviewed will be returned to the sponsoring committee with specific feedback comments from RAC.

TC’s are encouraged to produce more projects • the current number of RTARS (5) and WS (4) for RAC to evaluate is quite low which may cause a shortage of promising research projects in the near future! • It takes between 1-2 years before a WS (Work Statement) is accepted and  a TRP (Tentative Research Proposal)  is ready for bidding. • If we don’t receive enough proposals during 2012/13 we may run out of projects.

  10. DENVER program • Contributions on research will be given special attention • A special new track to expose Ashrae research activities • Technical Papers, Conference papers, Seminars and forums related to research plans, on-going research or their results will be given a preference • TCs are encouraged to use this opportunity to make research activities more visible!

Research Manual 2012: Some of Changes • Section 3.2 – RTAR Submission and Approval Process – Updated and harmonized manual text with new RTAR review form used by RAC • Section 3.3 – RTAR Form – updated descriptive text under form headings to better describe what information RAC seeks from TCs under these headings.

Research Manual 2012: Some of Changes • Section 6.2 – Project Analysis Sheet – Updated Criteria A & B review criteria on form • Section 7.1 – Unsolicited Research Proposals (URPs) – Added text for handling URPs that are a follow-on project to a previous ASHRAE research project. Also updated the suggested review criteria for URPs

Research Manual 2012: Some of Changes in Section 3.2. • Provide realistic estimated project costs and duration. • RTAR should indicate if the project is primarily a paper study, or whether it involves computer simulations, laboratory testing, and/or field measurements. • For simulations, laboratory or field testing, describe the size of the anticipated test matrix (e.g., two different ventilation strategies will be tested in four buildings).

Why do RTARs get Returned? • Most common reasons • Idea not appropriate for ASHRAE funding • Not adequate references to past work or existing literature • Not clear how project will “advance” the state-of-the art • Budget does not seem in line with work to be completed: provide realistic and justified cost estimations • Its about communicating your idea clearly

New RTAR coversheet • Be aware to use this new coversheet • Improved layout and easy to fill in fields in the word template • -the questions : • Has an electronic copy been furnished to the MORTS? • Has the Research Liaison reviewed the RTAR? • Also helping to remind that it is beneficial to consult your RL before sending the RTAR.

  16. Use Your Research Liaison • Your Liaison should read your RTARs and WSs before you submit them. • But give him more than a couple days before the deadline • Your Liaison has the Answers and can help you interpret RAC comments and Manual • Your Liaison is your champion! • Your RL will advocate for you, if he is involved in the preparation proces of RTARs or WSs

  17. Ask your Research Liaison • The best advocate you have is your RL, • Involve the RL from start to submission of RTARS or Work-Statements • This is a more secure, faster way to your success • RAC is aware that it is not easy to find your RL in person during the meeting, but sending the RL an email is very easy, you don’t have to know his name : just for section x: RLx@ashrae.net • Inform your RL about your drafts and questions before our meetings, this makes it possible to consider the RL feedback in your TC!

Dates and Reminders • RAC reviews RTARs and Work Statements at every meeting • Summer, Winter, Technology Weekend (October, sometimes March) • RTARs and Work Statements due May 15, August 15, December 15 • Conditionally approved WS due to MORTS by September 15 to go out for bid in October • Nominations for Service to ASHRAE Research Award due September 30
