1. Flanders in Europe • OBJECTIVE: Research Center for Advanced Energy Technology in Flanders • SET-plan • Pillar 1: EII • Pillar 2: EERA • Joined forces • Research Evolution
Research Evolution industrial relevance Research, Development & Demonstration Concerto, … DSO demo’s Research & development EIE, Ind. Init. IWT projecten Applied Research FP7-8-… SBO, IWT grants Fundamental Research JRC FWO, GOA… time
SET-plan-EC: pillar 1:SET - European Industrial Initiatives • Initiative from Industry • Large-scale pilot projects + technological innovation : EEGI • 7 initiatives: wind, solar, bio-energy, CCS, electricity grid, smart cities, sustainable nuclear energy • Theme “smart grids” explicit in min. 4 themes • Theme smart cities important part • Theme green cars: grids essential
SET-plan – EC pijler 2: European Energy Research Alliance • Joint energy research programs supporting SET-plan • Strength partner = crucial for participation • 12 working groups e.g. electric power storage transportation & networks solar photovoltaic transmission and distribution network for the future wind energy • 10 founding partners: • CEA (France) • CIEMAT (Spain) • CRES (Greece) • ECN (Netherlands) • ENEA (Italy) • Helmholz Association (Germany) • LNEG (Portugal) • Riso – DTU (Denmark) • UK-ERC (UK) • VTT (Finland)
2. Strategic goal for relocationVito/KULeuven • VITO searches expansion of activities, Mol remains core area, some activities elsewhere • K.U.Leuven wishes to develop axis Limburg/Leuven; reflects already for long time on a spin-off/technology park in Limburg
3. Related projects– organizations • Generaties (Flanders’ initiative for renewable energy technologies) • Linear (intelligent grids, research ) • Smart Grids Flanders: SGF
Generaties • Smart grids • Wind • VFI (Flemish Photovoltaic Initiative) • Bio-fuel
Smart Grids • R&D-partners: • Work out concrete concepts where energy demand & supply are alligned intelligently, taking into account: • Flexibility of customers • Flexibility of local producers in combination with storage systems • Network issues • Communication aspects • Integration of energy demand for mobility • Possible control strategies • E-market • Realisation of large scale pilot project and simulation VPP
SGF (Smart Grids Flanders) • Objective
4. Position within Europe • SET plan • Smart Grids Platform • EIT
SET plan • EEGI: 2 billion Euro • Other funds: together 8 to 9 billion Euro • By 2020 • Financing: • 7th and 8th framework program • CO2 emission certificates: • European pre-allowance, 300 million EUAs • Rest: transition and adaptation • Flanders wishes “an unfair share of the deal”
General Context EIT & KIC InnoEnergy • Anew collaboration model promoting cross-national, cross-sectoral and cross-disciplinary approaches to knowledge sharing and transfer for excellence in innovation. • For the first time, higher education will interact on an equal footing with other partners. Integrating the “knowledge triangle”
General Context EIT & KIC InnoEnergy • The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) has designated the InnoEnergy consortium as one of its first 3 KICs (Knowledge and Innovation Communities) . • InnoEnergy's partners are KULeuven, VITO, the Technical University Eindhoven, TNO and Eandis. • InnoEnergy will combine the knowledge and experience of business, research and education for the development of intelligent energy efficient buildings and cities. http://www.innoenergy-initiative.com/
For the Industry • A hotbed of ideas • Large facilities • Human resources • With a glance at Europe
