Objectives: Identify 4 Oceans Identify the Seven Continents Identify your Country Identify your State Differentiate between County, City, Town, and Village
Part I: Oceans • 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans • There are 5 oceans • Arctic • Atlantic • Indian • Pacific (largest) • Southern
Part I: Oceans • Ocean facts: • Salinity refers to the salt content of Ocean water • If you drink salt water you can get sick and even die • The deepest point is the Mariana Trench in the Pacific at 36,000ft • The Bermuda Triangle is in the Atlantic off the coast of Florida • The oceans contain 99% of the earth’s living space. • Less than 10% of that had been explored • Contains 50-80% of life on earth • Ocean tides are caused by the Earth rotating while the Moon and Sun’s gravitational pull acts on ocean water.
Part II: Continents • Continents: • On Earth, the land is broken into large pieces called Continents. • A Continent is an area of land which is divided into Countries. • Some continents are surrounded by oceans and other continents are connected to other continents.
AFRICA • Located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. • The Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea also border the continent. • Is the 2nd largest of the continents making up about 20% of the Earth’s land. • Has the 2nd largest population. • Made up of 53 countries. • Is divided into 8 regions.
Antarctica • Is the 5th largest continent, about 9% of Earth’s land. • The only people that live here are scientists. • The Southern Ocean surrounds all sides of the continent. • Is covered mostly by ice. • Has the coldest and windiest climate on the planet.
Asia • Is the largest continent, about 30% of the land • Has the highest population of all the continents • Contains 44 countries • Borders Europe and Africa on the West • Borders the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean on the South and East
Asia • Mt. Everest, the world’s tallest mountain is located in Nepal in Asia. • China and India are counties that have the highest population in the world • The Ural Mountains separate Asia and Europe • Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines are just some of the island countries that are a part of Asia
Australia • Is the smallest continent, about 5% of the land mass • Has the smallest population • Is made up of a single country, Australia. • Australia is about the same size as the 48 connected United States
Europe • Is only bigger than Australia, takes up about 6% of the land mass • Has the 3rd largest population • Contains 46 countries like England, Spain, Italy, France, and Germany • The Atlantic Ocean is located to the West. • The Mediterranean Sea is located to the South • Asia borders it in the East
North America • Is the 3rd largest continent, about 16% of the land on earth • Has the 4th largest population • Contains 23 countries -the United States and Canada being the largest two • Although Greenland is in North America it is owned by Denmark • Includes Central America – Mexico and others • The Pacific Ocean borders N. America in the West and the Atlantic Ocean borders it in the East
South America • Is the 4th largest continent, about 12% of the land mass • Has the 5th largest population • Contains 12 countries • Has some major natural landforms, the Amazon River, Andes Mountains, and the rainforest
Part III: Countries • Continents are broken up into smaller areas called “Countries” • Countries can also be called Nations or States • Ex. “State of Israel” • There are 189 -195 countries in the world (some countries are not recognized by others like Taiwan) • In terms of size the 3 largest are: Russia, The US, and Canada. • In terms of population the top 3 are: China (1.3 billion), India (1.2 billion) and USA (313 million)
Your Country • The United States: • Largest Country in North America • Made up of 50 states • Mainland (contiguous) has 48 • 2 states NOT in mainland: • Alaska borders Canada in NW • Hawaii is in middle of the Pacific ocean • There are 5 territories of the US: • Northern Marianas • Guam • American Samoa • Puerto Rico • US Virgin Islands • Capital is Washington D.C located on border of states of Maryland and Virginia • Bordered by: • North – Canada • East – Atlantic Ocean • South – Mexico • West – Pacific Ocean
Your Country • The US is broken up into regions (areas): • Pacific • Rocky Mountains • Southwest • Northwest • Southeast • Midwest • Noncontiguous
