  3. Section 1 The Nature of Water A. Water, a molecule composed of 2 hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom, is found on Earth in liquid, solid, and gaseous states. 1. To change water from solid to liquid or from liquid to gas, bonds must be broken. 2. In changing from gas to liquid or from liquid to solid, water gives off energy.

  4. Latent Heat: pg. 9-10 latent heat of fusion the heat energy needed to change water from a solid to a liquid; It takes 335J (joules (J) - unit used to measure heat) the amount of heat needed to change water from a liquid to a gas. 2260J *It takes much more energy to move from a liquid to gas than from a solid to liquid latent heat of vaporization

  5. Density - the amount of mass in a unit of volume. density of water at 4 C = 1g/cm3 2 ways to change density of water 1. Added another substance such as salt, change the density of water. 2.Temperature also affects water density; warm water is less dense than cold water.

  6. Cohesion(FC) The attraction between water molecules that allows them to form drops and remain liquid at room temperature. Water is a polar molecule (FC) a molecule with a weak charge on each end like a magnet.

  7. Specific Heat - (FC) the amount of energy needed to raise the temp. of 1g of a substance 1 degree C.

  8. Properties of water 1. Latent Heat a. vaporization b. fusion

  12. Latent Heat talks more about state changes Specific Heat both talk about changing energy - how much energy needed

  14. Section 2 Why is water necessary? How is water important in the human body? 70% of body made of water major part of cells controls body temp move nutrients, eliminates waste, aids in digestion, lubricates joints How is water important to all life? provides habitat and life to all organisms in rivers, lakes streams,

  15. Two ways water is used the most in the United States. 1. Agriculture 44% 2. Electricity generation pg. 20 List ways industry can conserve water. 1. recycle used water. 2. overhead irrigation uses less water than flooding fields. Slow drip irrigation 3. mulching 4.set irrigation to run by soil dryness.

  16. Ways to conserve water at home. 1. turn off water while brushing teeth 2. take showers not baths 3. stop leaks in sinks and hoses 4. save water while it is warming 5. put hoses on a timer 6. full washer and dish washer loads 7. use low flow toilets and shower heads
