  2. Childhood Born in Osnabrück, Germany in 1898 Poor, but happy childhood Interested in music at a young age; played both the organ and the piano At the age of 17, Remarque began to write essays and poems; started his first novel

  3. Military Service Drafted in November, 1916 at the age of 18 Sent to the Western Front in Flanders (modern day Belgium) Worked in a support unit behind lines Layed barbed wire and built bunkers and dugouts

  4. Military Service (Cont.) Wounded in July, 1917 while retrieving an injured soldier during an attack Sent to a hospital, spent most of the rest of the war recuperating During hospital stay, wrote short pieces published in German magazines Incorporated his war experiences in the novel All Quiet on the Western Front (German: ImWestennichtsNeues)

  5. After the War Went to college and became a teacher Worked at odd jobs In 1925, edited a sports magazine Published All Quiet on the Western Front in 1929 In 1931, bought and moved to a villa in Switzerland on Lake Maggiore
