NEW COINS TO REPLACE OLD ONES • New series of coins depicting* Singapore landmarks will be issuedin the middle of the year • Made of multi-ply plated steel • Will be sized progressively** by denomination*** • 5-cent coin will be the smallest and $1 coin the biggest • $1 coin will be bigger than 50-cent coin • $1 coin will be bimetallic and also have two colours –silver in middle and gold on the rims DICTIONARY *Depicting: represent by a drawing, painting, or other art form **Progressively : steadily and continuously ***Denomination: the face value of a banknote, coin, or postage or stamp
REASONS FOR THE CHANGE • Multi-ply plated steel is lighter and cheaper to produce than that of old coins • Savings of 35 per cent to 40 per cent • There is a 30-year tenure* for coins and the current series is fast approaching the end of tenure DICTIONARY *Tenure: a period of time
WHAT NEW COINS WILL FEATURE • Will have a different edge pattern to help the visually impaired* to distinguish them easier • Numerals will be larger • Has an electro-magnetic signature to prevent counterfeiting** • $1 coin has a laser mark micro-engraving of the Vanda Miss Joaquim flower • DICTIONARY • *Visually impaired: partially blind • **Counterfeiting: made in exact imitation of something valuable with the intention to deceive or defraud
WHAT THE COINS WILL FEATURE… • 5-cent coin –The Esplanade • 10-cent coin –Public Housing • 20-cent coin –Changi Airport • 50-cent coin –Port of Singapore • $1 coin –The Merlion
EFFECTS OF CHANGE • All past, current and new coins are legal tender*. • Machines which accept coins will have to be calibrated ** (eg supermarket trolleys, lockers, vending machines, coin deposit machines at bank, MRT and LRT ticketing machine etc.) DICTIONARY *Legal tender: coins or banknotes that must be accepted if offered in payment of a debt. **Calibrated: carefully assess, set, or adjust
