  4. Jordan • Jordan, Egypt, and Israel made a peace treaty. • Jordan gained independence in 1946 • British had control of Jordan before they gained their independence

  5. Syria/Lebanon • 1920 Syria was owned by France • France divided Syria into in two • Lebanon gained independence in 1943 • Christians and Muslims began fighting in • This caused a 15 year civil war • Syria refused to join another war against Iraq

Ottoman empire • Located in Middle East, Europe, and North Africa • Owned Iraq and Kuwait • Alliance with Germany against Russia • Promised all of Arabia if they defeat the Saudi’s • If Germany had won the war the Ottoman Empire would have a lot more land • They put threats on Britain because they had Germany as a ally

  7. wars • Britain and Russia fought in a civil war • WWI • Ottoman and Arabia in a war over land • First battle of Gaza • Third battle of Gaza • Iraq and Kuwait fought in a war

  8. Changes • Countries started and stopped • Other countries got involved • New religions and people practicing • Many people killed • Many wars • Laws were obeyed with little respect and new laws were formed

  9. Countries affected • Britain, France, Ottoman Empire, Germany • Wanted land from middle east • Arabs had little land and government left • Countries with land damage • Syria broke into Lebanon • Israel broke in to Palestine

  10. religion • Suffered to exist • People still practice • Countries came in and made people stop practicing • Other people thought religion was offensive • Jews had 6 million people die • Muslims, Islam, Jews, and Christians

  12. Problems caused • Rest of countries wanted land • Government and environment was displaced • Still weak nation • Still attacked by other counties later • Not a lot of health • New religion started

  13. Why the middle east? • Oil • Land • Money • Rights to the sea • Religious groups • Power over people
