W200 is divided into three units… Unit #1: Why Technology? Unit #2: Technology for Learners and Learning Unit #3: Professional Teaching in a Digital World This week: The 3Es
Unit 2: Technology for Teaching and Learning • We are shifting the focus from “why” to “how”. • Primary focus of Unit 2 is: • HOW do teachers implement technology into classroom? • HOW do teachers make the best use of the technologies we have access to? • HOW do we teachers evaluate the best use of the technologies?
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION Effectiveness, Efficiency, Enhancement (3Es)
THE 3E’s Is one criteria we use in W200 How to use the 3 E’s.. • Define the learning objective, • Define the task, • Select a tool to support the task (use 3 e’s)
WHAT ARE THE 3 E’s? • EFFECTIVENESS • Meet the learning goals successfully (Standards) • EFFICIENCY • Save time, effort, and cost (Resources) • Should be coupled with effectiveness • ENHANCEMENT • Offer Engaging learning experience (Digital Natives) • Enrich learning environments
DISCUSSION Q: Which is impacted the most in this video? Effectiveness, Efficiency, or Enhancement? Creating Common Craft style videos to introduce persuasive writing 7th Grade, English Language Arts
DISCUSSION – Poll Everywhere Activity • Question: In the example, which E(s) is the most important and evident? Why or why not? • Effectiveness • Efficiency • Enhancement • Can a technology tool/resource have more than 1 E? • Should a technology tool/ resource have all 3Es? Poll Everywhere Link
Instructional Perspective • EFFECTIVENESSis about “Does it accomplish learning outcomes?” • Examples: • Timeline Tool: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington • 50 states • Inspiration
Instructional Perspective • Learning should be EFFICIENT • Overview: • Using technology to speed up the learning process • Using technology to quickly make educational materials • Enables more learning by eliminating laborious processes • Speed / Easiness / Cost / Resource
LEARNING SHOULD BE “EFFICIENT”! • Examples: • Thinkfinity:Games and Tools(Free online educational game) • Netvibes/Feedly/ Reddit / Stumbleupon • Diigo / Delicious/ • Webspiration/Inspiration • Quizlet • Microsoft Office Products templates
INSTRUCTIONAL PERSPECTIVE • Learning should be ENHANCING • Overview: • Using technology increases student motivation and engagement • Using technology makes the impossible (or difficult) possible • Creates exceptional learning experiences • Enriches learning environments
LEARNING SHOULD BE “ENHANCED”! • Examples: • Live Mocha • ReachtheWorld • Aha! Math • Xpeditions • Google LitTrips
