On day (30), 256 carried the rice that filled the last four storehouses. All together , Rani had more than one billion grains of rice . Long ago in India, there lived a raja. The people were rice farmers and the raja ordered that everyone must give nearly all of the rice to him. “I will store the rice in a safe place, so that when there is no food, everyone will have rice to eat, and no one will be hungry.” The raja said. Each year, the raja’s men gathered nearly all the rice and put it in the storehouses. But the people have just a little rice to eat everyday. 10 1
On day 27, 32 bulls carried 64 baskets of rice. The raja was very worried because only one grain of rice became a very big number, but he will give her the rice as he promised. On day 29 Rani had the rice that filled two storehouses. Then one year the rice grew badly and people were hungry. The raja’s men asked him to open the storehouses and give the rice to the people as he promised. “No!” cried the raja. “I must have the rice for myself, a raja must not be hungry!” 9 2
On day 9 Rani had 256 grains of rice. On day 12 she had 2048 grains of rice. On day 16 she had 32768 grains of rice, this is about one bag. Here the raja started to feel worried. On day 20 Rani had 16 bags of rice! On day 24 she had 8388608 grains of rice, enough to fill 8 big baskets which were carried by 8 deer. One day the raja ordered to have a dinner party and he needed some rice to cook, so a servant led an elephant to the palace, carrying two full baskets of rice. 8 3
A village girl named Rani saw that some rice was falling from one of the baskets. She walked beside the elephant to catch the falling rice in her skirt until she reached the palace. Rani was clever and she had a good plan. “Only one grain of rice?” asked the raja. “I’m a raja and I can give you more.” “Ok,” said Rani.”I want to please you, today you will give me one grain of rice. Then each day for 30 days you will double the number. So tomorrow you will give me two and the next day four, and so on for 30 days.” 7 4
When the raja heard about this, he asked to see Rani because he wanted to reward her. But Rani only wanted to have one grain of rice. At the palace, a guard saw her and cried, “Stop, thief! Where are you going with that rice?” “I am not a thief,” she said. “This rice fell from the basket and I want to give it back to the raja.” 6 5
