Sustainable development of the society critically depends on natural resources and their management…

    4. A Word of Caution… There is no single best system of management that could be commended for all situations and for all times.

    6. What Can Make A Difference… Peoples participation can make the difference between a successful and a failed case of natural resource management.

    7. Why Not Nationalization…. Experience with nationalization of natural resources has not been good in most of the cases all over the world.

    8. Privatization…Why Or Why Not… Why…. It has been justified on efficiency grounds Why Not… It has been condemned on equity and sustainability grounds

    9. Why Cooperative Management… Since the resources belong to everyone it is preferable to manage these resources in a cooperative style. Assigning property rights to the landless poor in such resources would improve equity. It would also enable higher peoples participation and since the resources belong to everyone it is preferable

    10. Why Cooperative Management… It can better meet the goals of efficiency, sustainability, equity, and resource users’ satisfaction. Further more, it is politically and socially more acceptable in most societies and nations than any other alternatives.

Authors Dr Katar Singh Dr Singh graduated with BSc and MSc degrees in Agricultural Economics from Government Agriculture College, Kanpur University and MS and PhD degrees in Agricultural Economics from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA. He has served as Director of the Bankers Institute of Rural Development, Lucknow and was a faculty member in the Department of Agricultural Economics, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. He has co-ordinated research and consultancy projects funded by national and international agencies and has over 100 publications and 8 books to his credit. He was Chair Professor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Director of the Institute of Rural Management of Anand, Gujarat, India. Apart from working papers and studies his books include Management of Common Property Resources- Principles and Case Studies, Rural Development: Principles, Policies and Management etc.

    17. Vishwa Ballabh Vishwa Ballabh is a Professor in Economics area. Prior to joining XLRI, he was Reserve Bank of India Chair Professor at the Institute of Rural management Anand. Prof Ballabh graduated in Agriculture from Pant Nagar and holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. He has been a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and was a Visiting Scholar at the Indiana University, USA and a Visiting Scientist at the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines. He has over twenty years of teaching and research experience. His major area of research interest has been institutions and natural resource management. He is a member of several national and international professional societies in agricultural, natural resource economics and development fields. He was Vice President of Indian Society of Agricultural Economics1996-97. He has published widely and co-edited two books titled, Farm Forestry in South Asia, Co-operative Management of Natural Resources.
