  2. Introduction to Ms. Anderson • Magnet High alum • B.S.E. in English from Baylor University • M.Ed. from LSUS • 12 years experience • Lead student trips overseas during Thanksgiving Break

  3. Expectations for Students • Come to class prepared with work and a positive attitude • Stay organized—Homework agenda, point sheets, binders, etc. • Commit to the class task • Follow directions, verbal & written • Ask questions

  4. Things we will cover in English I • Literature — short stories, novels, drama, nonfiction, poetry, and more! • Grammar— DOL, Sentence Editing, etc. • Vocabulary (Vocabulary for the College- Bound Student) • Writing— Organization, Rhetoric, etc.

  5. Units of Study 1 & 2 Unit One— ”The Power of One” A study of individuals who stood up for what they believed in *To Kill a Mocking Bird, Harper Lee Antigone, Sophocles (class copies provided) Unit Two— “Going the Distance…” A study of the Journey motif The Odyssey, Homer (class copies provided)

  6. Units 3 & 4 Unit Three– “You Spin Me Right Round” Examining spin, satire, propaganda, & logical fallacies *Animal Farm, George Orwell *unSpun: Finding Facts in a World of Disinformation, Brooks Jackson, Kathleen Hall Jamieson Unit Four– “Young Love” A look at impulsiveness, the teenage brain, cause & effect relationships Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare (class copies provided)

Grading • Caddo Parish scale • A(100-93), B(92-85), C(84-75), D(74-67), F(<66) • Grades are based on: tests, quizzes, homework / classwork, projects, essays, and Socratic seminars. *Semester finals 25% of the 2nd or 4th Nine Weeks Grade • Progress reports will go out the week of 9/16 • Please keep up-to-date with JPAMS • E-mail me with any concerns or questions!
