Mission Statement Sequoyah Middle School will provide the opportunity to explore the educational and social foundations necessary to succeed in an ever-changing world.

SMS Milestones AYP 2008-09/ 2009-10 – Absolute Bar CCPS Greatest increase in 8th Grade Writing Scores 16% MMGW Model School – 2008-09/ 2009-10 Increased Student Attendance (from 91% in 2007 to 96.2% in 2009) Increased Faculty Attendance (from 88% in 2007 to 92.9% in 2009) Decreased Discipline Referrals (from 1057 in 2007 to 714 in 2009)
Continue Milestones… • Successful schoolwide production – “The Wiz” • Cheerleaders attended nationally recognized UCA camp at University of Georgia. • Clayton County Social Studies Award for most participation with Inauguration Activities and Student Engagement in History. • Multiple Students placed in Clayton County’s Science Fair. One sixth grade student placed third overall in the region. • Sequoyah Middle School’s math team placed third in the county. Sixth grade placed third overall. Individual math winners were identified from 6th grade.
Continue Milestones… 50 students and teachers attended the 2009 Inauguration of our 44th president. 54 students and teachers attended the Y.E.S. (Youth Education Series) Program at Disney World. Students also visited all four Disney Theme Parks.
2010-11 Smart Goals • Increase the percentage of Black, Hispanic, Socioeconomically Disadvantaged, and Students with Disabilities subgroups that meet or exceed on the math component of the CRCT by 10%. • Increase the percentage of Black, Hispanic, and Economically Disadvantaged Subgroups that meet or exceed on the English/Language Arts components of the CRCT by 5%. • Increase the percentage of Students With Disabilities subgroup that meet or exceed on the English/Language Arts components of the CRCT by 10%. • Decrease the number of students absent 15 days or more by 3%.

Strategies for AYP • Disaggregate the Data for AYP Content Areas… • FAY (Fiscal Academic Year Began October 7th). • Identify Subgroups (More than 75 students in a category) and the specific students in each subgroup who will count for Sequoyah Middle School’s Academic Performance for 2009 AYP. • Using 2008 data and the 2009 FAY, compile the scores needed to make AYP in each academic area.

Continue Strategies… • Implementation of Study Skills Courses in Connections Three “Testing Strategies” connection’s courses have been added for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. • 15 bubble students (790 to 805 on CRCT) from each grade level will be identified to take the courses each nine weeks (45 students each 9 weeks total will be served). The students will be identified by academic coaches and counselors using former CRCT and ITBS scores. • 4.5 weeks of math (with integration of basic skills, test–taking strategies, SRA Math, and Study Island). • 4.5 weeks of reading/language arts (with integration of test-taking strategies, Study Island, and Passing the CRCT Reading (American Book Company). * Applies to Identified Bubble Students
Continue Strategies • Tutorials (All Students May Participate) • Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies - All Grade Levels • Thursdays • 45 minutes • Connections Period (Report to Connection’s 1st – then report to tutorials). • Teachers identify students for participation. Names are written on tutorial sheets. See Mrs. Minor and Mrs. Jackson for tutorial sheet. • Tutorial Rosters must be submitted to Mrs. Johnson weekly. * Applies to all students in grade levels
Study Island • Study Island Pull-outs (Math and Language Arts/Reading) • Bubble Students (780 to 790 on 2008 CRCT) • ELL Students • Students With Disabilities • Title Parapro creates schedule in conjunction with academic coaches • Teachers receive schedule via e-mail daily * Applies to identified bubble students
Cont. Strategies… • CRCT Afterschool Remediation • 12 Weeks - (January to April) • Tuesdays and Thursdays • 6th, 7th, and 8th Grades (Failed CRCT, Retained, SWD, ELL, and Level Tier 3 RTI) • Transportation will be provided * Applies to all students who failed the CRCT.
Cont. Strategies • Flexible Grouping/Pullouts • Each team gives a diagnostic test or assessment (such as “Are You Ready, Benchmarks, and ongoing assessment”) to all students in math, language arts, science, and social studies. • Flexible groups are formed based on student knowledge of pre-requisite standards the student must know to master the upcoming content. * Applies to all grade levels
