The Crusades • They took back Holy land in 1099 • Wars went on and off for 200 years • Conquered land divided into 4 small states
Who won the Wars? • 1st Crusade- Christians • 2nd – 9th Crusade-Muslims
Children’s Crusade • In 1212 two groups joined the Crusades -From France and Germany -Mostly made up of Children • It didn’t end very well
The Impact • Expanded the European Economy • Crusaders brought back Byzantine goods like -Fabrics -Spices - Perfumes • Fleets turned into trade ships
Pros and Cons of Crusades Pros Cons Power struggle still went on Many people had died Christians lost the Holy Land • Helped increase trade • Brought foreign goods to Europe • Gave power to the Pope and the Church
Effects on Monarchs and the Church • Increase of power in monarchs -Rulers used taxes to support the Crusades • Papal at its highest point - Short-lived period - Power struggle against Monarchs
