  1. MRI: Acquisition of an AFM for Visualization, Assembly and Analysis of Materials at the Nanometer and Molecular Scale Richard P. Vinci, Lehigh University, DMR 0923066 (a) Complementary AFM and SEM images have revealed that amorphous (glassy) SbSI evaporates during low power laser exposure, but converts to a crystalline pyro-optic phase at higher laser power. This can be used to create new infrared sensors and waveguides. (b) Studying the uptake of single-wall carbon nanotubes by live C17.2 mouse multi-potent stem-like cells is enabled by the AFM TIRF optics. Different parts of the cell fluoresce at different wavelengths, thereby allowing imaging of foreign materials like nanotubes that can then be scanned at the nanoscale. 2. MRI: Acquisition of an AFM for Visualization, Assembly and Analysis of Materials at the Nanometer and Molecular Scale Richard P. Vinci, Lehigh University, DMR 0923066 The new AFM instruments have been used for training a large number of graduate and undergraduate students, including several from underrepresented groups. A few specific examples are: Tom Flores (Lehigh ’13) has used the system to observe carbon nanotubes. He presented his research results at the National Society of Hispanic Physicists (NSHP) Meeting in Austin, TX. http://www.azonano.com/news.aspx?newsID=23677 Ms. Massooma Pirbhai and Ms. Tetyana Ignatova use the instrument for NSF and DoD supported research programs. Ms. Ignatova is now an AFM superuser. She trains new users and teaches younger students about AFM. Two REU students are using the system in Summer 2012 (as a part of Lehigh’s long-standing Physics REU Program). AFM training session held by Tetyana Ignatova (AFM superuser, Ph.D. candidate) Massooma Pirbhai (Bio-Physics) Tom Flores’13 (Phys. Major, NSHP member)
