  1. HIV-1 pol gene diversity and antiretroviral drug resistance mutations in drug naïve patients in Santos metropolitan area, Brazil. Rafael Favero Ambar Laboratório de Biologia Molecular, Centro Universitário Lusíada, Santos/SP - Brazil

  2. Background • Santos metropolitan area was the first, in Brazil, to include HIV-1 antiretroviral therapy in HIV/AIDS programs in 1996. • We have described two HIV-1 circulating recombinant forms in Santos-Brazil classified as CRF28_BF and CRF29_BF. CRF28_BF CRF29_BF (Sa-Filho DJ, et al 2006).

  3. Objectives • Characterization of HIV-1 subtypes • Recombinants • Antiretroviral drug resistance mutations in drug naïve patients in Santos metropolitan area, Brazil

  4. Patients and Methods DNA (buffy coat) PCR 1200bp Pol gene Samples (2006/07) Recombinants Identify resistance mutations Sequencing Phylogenetic analysis

  5. Results Table 1: Drug resistance mutations from drug naïve patients. Figure 1: Phylogenetic classification

  6. Conclusions • Protease gene did not show any relevant codon mutation related to resistance. • As the recombinants CRF28_BF and CRF29_BF were found in different cities of Santos metropolitan area, they are perceived as important for the local epidemic evolution. New policies: • To warn about transmitted resistance. • To encourage safe sex.

  7. Ackonowledgments • Co-workers Natalia Brenneken Duarte Mariana Santos Thome Rafael Bragança Rodrigues Matias Valéria Candido Shirley Komninakis Luiz Henrique Gagliani Marcos Montani Caseiro Dercy José de Sa-Filho • The study was supported by: • Laboratório de Biologia Molecular • Fundação Lusíada • Centro Universitário Lusíada, • Santos/SP - Brazil
