CDC & Meetup.com What: An innovative social media program was run with MeetUp.com, an online social networking website where people with similar interests organize themselves online but meet up offline.
CDC & Meetup.com When: This program was created as part of CDC’s 2011-2012 National Influenza Vaccination Campaign and specially supported the launch of National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) 2011 (December 4th – 10th, 2011).
CDC & Meetup.com Who: The program targeted CDC’s campaign audiences and strove to move these audiences beyond sheer information and message sharing – and go get vaccinated together.
CDC & Meetup.com What did we Hope to Achieve? Raise awareness Engage MeetUp groups to get their flu vaccine together or on their own Build momentum leading up to - and throughout - NIVW.
MeetUp Groups Spread CDC Messages Total Online Impressions: 3.7 million
MeetUp Platform Helped Turn Message into Action • 17 groups got vaccinated; • A total of 236 people who got vaccinated on their own; and • Total number of people vaccinated during this program was 302.
The Conversation Continued • MeetUp groups met more than 997 times • A total of 8,972 members were engaged
Why does it matter? The campaign with MeetUp was a first of it’s kind for CDC. The program showed that social media could influence behavior change – going beyond awareness to get people vaccinated. It opened the door for future programs where social media can be used to motivate people online to change behaviors and complete an action. Thank you!
