The GPS must get a good fix (satellite lock) so the data includes Lat/Lon

5. GPS connection debugging Turn On “GPS Debug” window
If GPS not already activated, tap Yes to activate
6. If no connection to GPS, will show empty window
If connected to GPS, text like this will scroll in window
This does not necessarily mean that you have a GPS “fix” yet – just a connection
7. You can turn Off “GPS Debug” window by clicking again in GPS menu (boxed icon = enabled)
If you got a connection, then wait for a fix (be out in the open!)
If you didn’t get a connection, check the “GPS options” (later slide)
8. GPS fix debugging Turn on the Position Window (satellite icon)
(Will ask about activating if needed)
The Position Window will tell you the state of your fix, or lack thereof
Here it knows nothing yet, all blank
(notice the cursor)
9. GPS: Getting a fix Starts Showing PDOP 50
Finally sees Satellites (all shown in a row while satellite location still being collected)
10. GPS Got a fix Position Window
Lat/Lon shown at top
Satellites spread out
PDOP drops (< 3 is OK)
(lower is better)
(can close Position Window now)
Cursor changes too
11. GPS Options (connections) Click Tools icon to open
“Protocol” tab
NMEA 0183
GPS Datum WGS84 or blank
12. GPS Options “GPS” tab
Port: VARIES !
Baud: 4800 usually
Parity: None
Monitor CTS/DSR off
RTS/DTR control on
Data/Stop 8/1 bits
(all but Port usually ok)

Can try COM1, COM2...
Can try manuals
Can use FINDGPS
(Tip: Write down correct one for your hardware once you find it)
