Senior Project Orientation Meeting, September 5, 2013 WHAT IS ASENIOR PROJECT? A Project which is . . . something you are personally interested in and/or something you are passionate about and demonstrates that you have learned something above and beyond what you already know (a learning stretch).
WHO WILL BE HELPING YOU WITH YOUR PROJECT? • School Advisor (teacher, counselor, administrator at Hellgate) • Community Mentor (professional, 21 yrs of age, not a relative)—oversees your Activity/Field Work • Community Service Supervisor—oversees your Community Service Work (might be the same person as the mentor if your entire project is community service based) • Guardian/Parent
COMPONENTS OF THE SENIOR PROJECT • Planning/Research—complete contracts • The Activity: 15 required hours • Multi-genre Writing Collection (3 pieces--One from each category: Personal/Informal, Formal/Structured, and Graphic/Visual) • Community Service: 10 required hours • Portfolio • Presentation
TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED OVER THE SUMMER • Make sure to choose a project that is a “Learning Stretch” • Choose a project you are sure of--are you passionate about this project? • Question your project choice--is it a realistic project both time-wise and financially? • Select a community mentor who has the expertise to provide you with the best mentoring--make sure the person is at least 21 years of age, not a relative, and lives in town or close to town • Keep a time log for all the hours you work on the project--remember your mentor has to be able to verify these hours • Document, document, document--take pictures, journalize, keep receipts, etc. • Remember your Community Service must be related to your project topic.
