  3. What is the difference between arguing and persuading? Or is there a difference?

  4. Argue – To give reasons for or against something. To persuade by giving reasons. Persuade – To influence or win someone over by argument or use of evidence. Is there a difference?

  5. Do you know how many different types of candy bars exist in the world today? Imagine that there are only two brands of candy bars in the world today. Your job is to come up with as many “logical” reasons for why the candy bar you chose is the best value.

  6. Choose a recorder Your group is to work together to develop at least 10 good reasons. Consider: *Packaging *Nutritional information *Ingredients – You may have to use a dictionary to identify some of these. You are much more convincing when you know your product. Don’t be afraid to do some research.

  7. Share your arguments with the rest of your candy bar lovers The first group will receive a large poster paper where they will record their top 5 reasons for why their candy bar is the best value. They will pass the paper on to another group who has the same candy bar. This group will add 5 more reasons to the list. The paper will continue through the groups until all reasons are listed.

  8. Snickers 1. Twix 1. A group member representing each candy bar should post their list on the front board. Each group should vote on the three reasons that best represent why their respective candy bar is the better value.

  10. Why should Your Essay Contain A Thesis Statement? • To put your main ideas into one summary sentence. • To better organize and develop the opinion/argument of your essay • To provide your reader with a “guide” to your argument

  11. How do you come up with a thesis statement? • The thesis should answer a single question that will give the main idea of essay, so come up with a question based on your opinion. • The answer to the question is the thesis statement for the essay.

  12. Example Question:“What are the potential benefits of using computers in a seventh grade class?” Answer/THESIS:“The potential benefits of using computers in a seventh grade class are…” (3 ideas/reasons)
