HOW DOES EDUCATION IMPACT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS? By: Gabriela Tesoriero CMP230.CL02 Information Literacy Instructor: John Kaucher, M.D. August 2, 2008
English Language Learners and Their Challenges • Schools are finding different ways to teach English Language Learners (ELL) students that come from different parts of the world. • Schools’ curriculum must be modified to serve the needs of ELL Students. • Identifying and finding the best way to teach ELL students continues to be a challenge in schools.
English Language Learners and Their Challenges • The language spoken at home is not English. • Different culture and economic status. • Entering U.S.A. with little or no education.
Literacy Versus Language Acquisition • Literacy and proficiency of the first language influences the proficiency of the second language. • ELL students with good academic skills in their native language will be more successful when being taught in English. • Students who are not proficient in their first language can take anywhere from four to seven years to learn a second language.
Conclusion • By the year 2010 it is expected that over thirty percent of school students will come from homes where English is not their primary language. • In order to meet ELL students’ needs, it will take a great effort on the part of districts, schools, administrators and teachers. • It continues to be a challenge to prepare non-English speakers academically.
