  1. Jacques Marquette: A Journey By Anna Moss, Alex Stornant and Sara Taub

  2. Who was Jacques Marquette? Who had 2 canoes, 5 men, an amazing partner along with a thirst for discovering new land? Well that’s Marquette, of course! He was a French explorer and Jesuit priest in the 1600’s. He was the founder of St. Ignace, Michigan, the first European settlement and was one of the first white men to discover the Mississippi River. Alex

  3. Family Marquette had a wealthy and noble family. His parents were Nicolas Marquette (stepdad) and Rose Marquette-de La Salle (not related to Robert de La Salle.) He had 5 other siblings, 2 older sisters and 3 younger brothers. Anna

  4. Childhood and Education Marquette was born on June 10th, 1637 in Laon, France. When he was just 9 years old, he refused to become a solider like his dad and other ansestors. He started going to a Jesuit University in Reims. He learnt math and geography. He graduated at 17 with a bachelor’s degree. He also taught for 10 years. When he was older, he learnt many Native American languages, along with Greek and Latin. He decided he wanted to become an explorer because he loved to travel and discover new land, along with spreading his religion. Sara

  5. Founding of St. Ignace Marquette was fleeing from the Sioux, with the Ottawa and Huron. He founded new land on the point of St. Ignace between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Alex

  6. Expedition with Jolliet In 1672, the governor of New France, (now Canada,) Frontenac chose Marquette and Jolliet to look for a new route to the Pacific Ocean. 1 year went by when they left for their journey. They took 5 men with them, along with 2 canoes and went down the Mississippi River, unknowingly. They stopped by some Native Americans, telling them they were going the wrong way. Then they turned around, and went back up the Mississippi River, back to where they started. Marquette’s health was dropping. Sara

  7. After Traveling to the Mississippi Marquette stayed in Mackinac, recovering from his sickness. He was also writing in a journal about his expedition. In 1674, Marquette went to the Illinois tribes to preach and found a mission. He left around Easter in 1675, but his health was dropping again. He returned back to Mackinac, but then he died. His body was moved to St. Ignace. Anna
