Opportunities for Business? Consultation document lists three distinct areas, namely; • Renewable Energy • Recycling • Resource Efficiency
Some examples of good help from Government bodies Scottish Energy Efficiency Office • Some excellent pilot work has identified savings in excess of £400K in seven on our Scottish Engineering member companies Envirowise • Offers free independent advice and support on practical ways of minimising waste and reducing environmental impact which can improve company profitability • Scottish Energy & Environmental Conference, Tuesday 8th February 2005,Thistle Hotel, Glasgow Scottish Enterprise • Finance via the “Proof of Concept Fund” towards a Tidal Power Generation System
Just a few examples of organisations already involved in the“Green Jobs Strategy” Vestas Celtic (Machrahanish) • Producing Wind Turbines Wavegen (Inverness) and Howden Group (Glasgow) • Produced the Limpet, the world’s first commercial scale wave energy device for use off Islay Ocean Power Delivery Ltd (Edinburgh) • Produced Pelamis (an offshore wave power generator) for testing at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney Various Scottish Universities • RGU Aberdeen created “Brian the Snail” the world’s first free standing tidal energy turbine system tested off Orkney
More examples Mitsui Babcock (Renfrew) have developed a range of Technologies to • Reduce pollutants from power and petrochemical plants • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions and • Tackle Waste Recycling/Waste to Energy • With support from DTI and EU have been able to successfully demonstrate NOx Reduction Technologies Numerous Scottish Engineering Manufacturing companies • are adopting “Lean Management Techniques” to reduce waste in its many forms by concentrating on the “Value Added Stream” and are thereby helping their overall competitiveness

What should we be doing now? • We all have a role to play in actively pursuing the real opportunities which undoubtedly exist in terms of Green Jobs • Manufacturing Engineering companies and their Service Sector colleagues must invest time and effort to maximise the market opportunities • Scotland/UK needs to learn from countries such as Japan, Germany, France,USA and support full scale demonstration plants to showcase our globally relevant technologies • Politicians must produce a realistic UK wide Energy Policy and be even more imaginative in finding ways of helping our Scottish/UK based companies particularly with regard to making best use of any available EU Funding

Our “School Report” “Undoubtedly has great potential!” “Needs to apply more concentrated effort to make the best use of that potential!” “Often seen as a loner and could be a better Team Player” “Overall could do better!”
