7.5 Types of Reactions&7.6 Combination Reaction By: Herjay&Sam
Why is this important? Learn more about different kinds of Chemical Reactions. Click HERE! Knowing what kind of Chemical Reaction that you are working on makes it easier to predict and determine the product(s) of the reaction.
Combination Reactions This reaction allows two elements or two compounds or an element and a compound to combine and form a new substance (single product). *Note* the product will always be a compound!
The Equation is Simple! A AB + B NEW COMPOUND! Either elements or compounds
Combination of Nonmetals This is a simple combination reaction between Sulfur and Oxygen. Balancing is not needed, atoms are exact!
Group A Metal + Nonmetal ? When a Group A Metal is combined with a nonmetal it forms a combination of the metal cation and nonmetal anion Use the ionic charges to find their formula and then BALANCE! For example: 2K(s) + Cl2(g) 2KCl(s)
Nonmetal Oxide + WaterAcid Some nonmetal oxides react with water to produce an acid, a compound that produces hydrogen ion in aqueous solution. For example: SO2(g) + H2O(l) H2SO3 (aq)
Metallic Oxides +WaterBase Metallic oxides react with water to form a base, a compound that contains hydroxide ion. Use ionic charges to get the formula for the product. For example: CaO(s) + H2O(l) Ca(OH)2 (aq)
Other Stuffs… B + AB A This equation is very similar to Combination Reaction, but don’t get confuse! Remember that Combination Combines! whereas Decomposition Decompose!
Why don’t you try it? Find the product of Cu + O2 ? and balance the formula a) Cu + O2 CuO b) 2Cu + O2 2CuO c) 4Cu + O2 2Cu2O d) 5Cu + O2 CuO2 YES, THERE ARE 2 POSSIBLE ANSWER! Cu can be Copper(II) Oxide or Copper (I) Oxide
Another One? No multiple choice this time! Find the formula and balance! Na2O + H2O Sodium Hydroxide Na2O + H2O 2NaOH
HOMEWORK! • Li+ O2? • Cl2O5+ H2O Chloric acid 3. Na + Cl2 ?
