Looking back at the Workshop on Participatory Innovation Development Polokwane, 30 Nov – 2 Dec 2005
What did we do? • Innovation Fair • Introduction to PROLINNOVA programme and concepts of innovation and PID • Experiences in innovation:- Ephraim Mtshali: indigenous chicken-keeping- Joseph Dolamo: Broadening Agricultural Service Extension Delivery (BASED)- Koki Mphahlele: participatory video- Rosina Libago: seed project + innovation to check moisture content of seed- Monique Salomon: PROLINNOVA-South Africa
What did we do? – continued • Articulating questions and insights about innovations and innovation processes • Field trip:- Mr Negolokwe’s water-harvesting innovations- Mrs Joyce Mudalahothe’s chicken nests and her neighbour’s zero-grazing system for goats • Feedback from field trip
What did we do? – continued • Organising / partnering to support innovation- Aaron Tlaka: Limpopo Small-Scale Farmers Forum and Eastern and Southern Africa Farmers Forum (ESAFF)- Thierry Lasalle: Centre for Rural Community Empowerment (CRCE) on “platforms”- Charity Mapumulo: ARC’s Agricultural Research for Development (ARD) programme- Monique Salomon: Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) – South Africa- Discussions of potential synergies and ways forward
What did we do? – continued • Documenting / exploring innovation- Kees Swaans: contextualising innovation within the HIV/AIDS pandemic- Farmers discussion group on ways of sharing their innovations- Development practitioners discussion group on ways of documenting and exploring innovations and innovation processes- Intellectual Property Rights • Action planning and defining own assignments
Insights about local innovation + PID • Many farmers may not realise the value of their innovations to other farmers • Farmers are keen to share innovations • Recognition of innovators could catalyse interest of local farmers • It is useful to visit innovators in groups because different people see things from different perspectives • Experimenting and innovation leads to more questions, experiments and innovation • Researchers are not rewarded to be involved in PID
Questions about local innovation + PID • How profitable are the local innovations? • Who owns the knowledge: individuals or community? • How are innovators linked with community, research, Dept of Agriculture etc? • What is the role of formal researchers? • Should PID be done with individuals or groups of farmers? • How can funds be raised to support the promotion of local innovation?
Action plans • ARD – PROLINNOVA collaboration in capacity building • Link ARC-SRL forum to PROLINNOVA to enhance working partnerships on the ground • Link BASED and PROLINNOVA: focus on community organisation • Link PELUM and PROLINNOVA • Farmers give feedback to their villages • Expansion of ESAFF from Limpopo to KwaZulu-Natal • Farmer training in photography and video • More catalogues on farmer innovations • Individually defined assignments on innovation and PID • Feedback workshop in early 2006
