THEMATIC ANALYSIS OF THE INTERACTION OF NASAL SEPTUM DEFORMATIONS AND MALOCCLUSIONS Dr. Emese Ábrám 1, Dr. Péter Hermann1, Dr. András Végh 2 1Semmelweis University of Medicine, Budapest, Hungary, 2Heim Pal Children's Hospital, Budapest, Hungary SEMMELWEIS UNIVERSITY Faculty of Dentistry Budapest, Hungary
Children – who have had orthodontic treatment – were examined at the Heim Pál Children's Hospital in Hungary As a side-result nasal septum deformities were found in many cases The proportion of these deviations was so high that a deeper examination was required to find relations and causes For this reason a thematic analysis in this field was carried out Is there any correlation or relation between the nasal septal deviations and the malocclusion? Can malocclusion cause deformity of the nasal septum? Objective and the aim of the study
MethodsCriteria of the thematic analysis • Research has been carried out in various databases about malocclusions and the deviation of the nasal septum and about their relation. Medline and Pubmed publications were concerned in the analysis in the interval of 1950-2008 • Our analysis concerned publications in Ovid (Medline) and Pubmed • The databases were analysed in the interval of 1950-2009 • No filtering by language was done • Publications on cleft lip and palate were excluded
Results 5838 publications were found about the deviation of the nasal septum and 4 times as many about malocclusions Septum nasi and malocclusion 43 Deviatio septi nasi and malocclusion 25 • each of the 25 publications were issued in periodicals • 15 were publicized in dental journals • 3 publications had no abstract in English, these were written in Japanese, Russian and Spanish • The abstract of 3 publications were issued in English, but the original articles were in Italian and in French • 3 publications were on animal testing
ResultsThe medical significance of the research The paediatric diseases often go together with malformation in the development of the viscerocranium There are evidences that anatomic deformation can be observed in the nasomaxillary region among 67% of the population The development of the nasomaxillary complex and the dentition are in interaction with each other 2 The malformation of the different parts of the viscerocranium are not irrespective from each other 3,4 The development of the maxilla can be affected with intervention at a young age 5 Diseases of certain parts of the cavum nase influence the future development of the orofacial area 6 • I.Pérez-Pinas et al.: J.Anat. 2000;197:221-227 • T. Billiet et al.: Eur.J.Orthod. 2001; 23(3):267-273) • 3. B.Thilander: Acta Odontol.Scand. 1995; 53(3):144-151 • 4. G.Adamopoulos et al.: J.Otolaryngol 1994; 23(2):84-87 • 5. A.Sasaki et al.: J.Oral Maxillofac.Surg. 2002; 60(6):667-675) • 6. LF. Grymer, C. Bosh: Rhinology. 1997;35:6-10)
Questions based on the thematic analysis The essence of deformations is based on asymmetries Is it true that – as a result of malocclusion – the maxilla is pressured and thus developed asymmetrically? Is it possible that asymmetrically forced dentures can cause deformities? In which cases can it be proven that these asymmetries are related to each other?
Conclusion Asymmetries in the nasal cavity and in the oral cavity developduring the growth of human This important field received only little attention recently This area is still to be explored in order to reach success in treatment in the young ages
