Network Terminology • DHCP • DNS • Subnet • TCP/IP • Multi-cast • NAT
DHCP The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is an auto configuration protocol used on IP networks. Computers that are connected to IP networks must be configured before they can communicate with other computers on the network. DHCP allows a computer to be configured automatically, eliminating the need for intervention by a network administrator. It also provides a central database for keeping track of computers that have been connected to the network. This prevents two computers from accidentally being configured with the same IP address. We recommend in basic installations that DHCP is used over statics IP address configurations.
DNS Domain Name System, this is an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. The internet really uses IP address however to make life easier, we use names for websites. Example:
Subnet A subnet is a logically visible subdivision of an Internet Protocol (IP) network. Breaking a network into smaller realms, a process called sub-netting this will use the address space more efficiently, enhance routing efficiency and have advantages in network management. Physical separation of network traffic may prevent excessive rates of Ethernet packet collisions in a larger network.
TCP/IP IP is the primary protocol in the Internet Layer of the Internet Protocol Suite and has the task of delivering distinguished protocol datagrams (packets) from the source host to the destination host solely based on their addresses. For this purpose the Internet Protocol defines addressing methods and structures for datagram encapsulation. The first major version of addressing structure, now referred to as Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) is still the dominant protocol of the Internet, although the successor, Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is being deployed actively worldwide.
Multicast Sooloos takes advantage of Multicast technology to give improved use of bandwidth when streaming the same data to multiple devices(zones)
NAT Network address translation (NAT) allows you to map a WAN port to a LAN port. Below shows port: 80 being translated to LAN IP address port:80 Sooloos uses port: 80 to stream using webclient.
