Definitions • There are two basic types of disease: • Infectious and, • Non-infectious • Infectious diseases are diseases that are caused by a pathogen and are contagiousor communicable(they can be spread from one person to another). • Non-infectious diseases are those diseases that are not caused by a pathogen and cannot be spread from one person to another.
Examples Examples
Infectious Disease • Can be passed on Indirectly i.e. via vectors (organisms that transmit disease). Eg: Flies, mosquitos, rats/mice etc • Can be passed on via Directly i.e .via direct contact (touching or being touched by diseased organisms or the transfer of disease over short distances – coughing and sneezing, etc)
Non-Infectious Disease • Can be due to 3 main factors: • Genetics • Diseases that are passed on from generation to generation, eg colour blindness, haemophilia etc. • Lifestyle (environment) • lack of physical activity, poor diet, smoking, drinking, living in areas of high pollution etc can lead to heart disease, cancers, diabetes etc. • Nutrition • Over eating (obesity), under eating, heart disease, malnutrition (eganemia and scurvy)

Infectious Diseases • Diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and other parasites are major causes of death, disability, and social and economic disruption for millions of people. Despite the existence of safe and effective interventions, many people lack access to needed preventive and treatment care. The lost productivity, missed educational opportunities and high health-care costs caused by infectious diseases directly impact families and communities. Infections are prevalent in developing countries, where co-infection is common. The negative impact of infectious diseases is most severe among the poorest people, who have the fewest material, physical and financial resources to draw from and limited or no access to health care, prevention tools and medications.
Statistics - Infectious Disease • Between 14 and 17 million people die each year due to infectious diseases – nearly all live in developing countries. • Particularly children. Pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria are leading causes of death among children under age • Infectious diseases are also destructive to the health of adults, causing disability, a poor quality of life, decreased productivity or even death. • People infected with one infectious disease become more susceptible to other diseases. • Non-infectious diseases are the biggest killer in developed countries
