  1. An Examination of Non-Academic Admission Criteria Selective Admissions ● Athletics ● Affirmative Action ● Legacy Admissions ● Non-Cognitive Variables

  2. Selective Admissions What began as merely a way of deciding which applicants to admit and to document that an applicant could do college-level work ended up being a way to determine the makeup of a university’s student body.

  3. Focus on Athletics This focus on athletics brought in new demographics and brought success and prestige to numerous institutions, thus creating a trend in admission preferences

  4. Legacy Admissions Though legacy admissions policies are legal, financially beneficial, and have been used by universities across the nation for years, many questions whether they are truly ethical.

  5. Affirmative Action For institutions that want to continue their efforts toward increasing diversity, creative solutions that sidestep direct racial considerations are becoming a more attractive option.

  6. Non-Cognitive Variables The argument was raised that standardized test scores and GPAs were not indicative of executives who demonstrated the grit and determination to succeed in business.

  7. Student Affairs Today Student affairs professionals, especially those in admissions, must understand the history and ethics of these practices in order to develop a clear picture of their institutions and their work.

  8. Snowball Discussion Activity Keep all papers anonymous Answer the questions by circling the number that corresponds with your opinion Be sure to comment about any strong feelings, thoughts, or reactions When finished wait for instructions
