  1. Equipping for ADS-B Out Peter Cassidy May 15, 2014

  2. ADS-B Out Questions • When to equip? • How to equip?

  3. Why ADS-B Out • Heart of NexGen ATC system • Tells ATC who you are and where you are • No need to give your “N” number and aircraft type • Preprogrammed, automatically displayed • Uses WAAS GPS for location • Enables better use of airspace • Status • U.S. has “full” coverage now

  4. ADS-B Coverage 4/15/14

  5. Why ADS-B Out • Heart of NexGen ATC system • Tells ATC who you are and where you are • No need to give your “N” number and aircraft type • Preprogrammed, automatically displayed • Uses WAAS GPS for location • Enables better use of airspace • Status • U.S. has “full” coverage now • Weather and Traffic available now • ATC use of NexGen is a work in progress

  6. ADS-B In • Separate issue from ADS-B Out • Provides the Weather and Traffic data link • You see what ATC sees • No mandate to implement • ADS-B Out required for reliable Traffic

  7. When to Equip for ADS-B Out • FAA mandate Jan. 1, 2020 • Alternatives • Wait until 2019 • Expect installation scheduling issues • Get the latest and greatest product • Lots of competition • Expect product evolution • Defer the expense • Do it now/soon • Good products available now • Vendors are offering incentives • Get reliable Traffic on ADS-B In

  8. How to Implement • There are two flavors of ADS-B Out • 1090 ES • Required in Class A airspace (over 18,000) • ICAO Standard • No associated data uplink • 978 UAT • Only works in the U.S. • Has associated ADS-B In (data uplink) • Both require WAAS GPS source • Mode C still required • Need to synchronize ADS-B and Mode C codes

  9. How to Implement • Depends on… • What avionics do you have installed now/planned • How integrated do you want to be • Tablet interface • Weather and Traffic on panel-mounted display • Where do you fly • Above 18,000 • U.S. Only • International

  10. My Situation • Bonanza • Garmin 530/430 WAAS GPS • Bendix/King KT 76 Mode C • iPad • Stratus 2 • ADS-B In Weather • Backup AI • XM Weather • Fly U.S., Canada • Might fly to Caribbean, not likely Mexico • Never above 18,000 • No plans to turbonormalize

  11. My Preferences • Prefer weather on iPad • Traffic on Garmin 530 is attractive • Will work well on iPad • Might be better on iPad • Might eventually upgrade to glass panel • Not definite • Leaning toward Garmin G500

  12. My Options • Replace KT 76 with 1090 ES • Add 978 UAT

  13. Replace Mode C with 1090 ES • Bendix/King KT 74 • $3,000 plus install (introductory special) • STC expected June-July 2014 • Slide-in replacement for KT 76 Mode C • Mode C and 1090 ES • Get GPS from my Garmin 530W • Use Stratus 2 for ADS-B In (Weather, Traffic) and backup AI • Lowest cost solution • No new antennas • No traffic on Garmin 530 • Garmin GTX330 • $6,000 plus install • Mode S and 1090 ES • Not slide-in replacement for KT 76 • TIS traffic on Garmin 530

  14. Add 978 UAT • Garmin GDL 88 • $4,000 plus install • ADS-B Out and In • Use Garmin 530W for GPS source • Traffic and Weather on Garmin 530 • Keep KT 76 for Mode C • Additional antenna for ADS-B Out • No Weather or Traffic feed to iPad • Keep Stratus 2 • Does not satisfy International requirements • Not a problem today

  15. FreeFlight 978 UAT • $4,000 to end of 2014, then $5,500 • Weather and Traffic on Tablet • Add $350 for WiFi to tablet • Display Traffic on GNS 500/400 • Needs additional GPS antenna • Can’t use GPS feed from Garmin 530W • Needs additional transponder antenna • Keep KT 76 for Mode C

  16. Open Questions • What new features will emerge over the next 5 years? • WiFi to tablets • Will Canada, Mexico, Caribbean mandate ADS-B Out? • Probably eventually • Would likely be 1090 ES • Will prices fall? • Probably not • Might get more value for the price

  17. My “Current” Plan • No action 2014, possibly 2015/2016 • Wait until slide-in replacement units certified • Would like to have Traffic • Replace KT 76 1090ES • Bendix/King KT 74, Trig, others • Keep Stratus 2 • Traffic and Wx on iPad • Standby AI • Keep XM Weather • ADS-B weather as backup

  18. Your Plan? • Depends on your situation and preferences • Time to get opinionated • Implement by 2018 at the latest • Plan on spending $5,000-$8,000

  19. Thank You
