CAREER CHOICE:Comic Strip Artist & CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATOR/AUTHOR By John McCants Date: 1/27/14
Step 1 • The first thing I would do is go back to school To get more experience drawing as well as studying creative writing On the side. • The School for Drawing is The Joe Kubert school for Cartooning and Graphic design . • Requirements are A Portfolio and A High School Diploma/GED.
STEP 2 • After Attending the school I would work for a newspaper organization drawing and probably even writing for the newspaper strips to get experience when it comes to writing and drawing. • To get this type of job I would have to submit another portfolio.
Step 3- Possibly, but maybe not • I would get my masters in English at the UCLA or Berkeley, these two schools have good English programs.
Step 4: The Result • After school I would continue to work creating comic strips, but also developing my children’s books. • After developing the children’s book I would self publish or find a publisher.
Qualifications to be a comic strip artist • You must be able to tell a story sequentially • The Art Must be consistent • Lastly you must make room for the text In order to be a qualified comic strip artist you You must meet these demands.
Qualifications to be a Children’sAuthor/Illustrator • Children’s Writeris to be skilled. • Having a English degree would help • Having a degree in art wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Benefits • A real benefit for comic strip artists and even children’s book authors/artists is creating an original story and art. • If the idea is a success with audiences (that is a huge success) then possibly the idea will be developed into different areas: a movie, toys, and television.
Nature of the job Comic strip artists. • Nature of the job can be Tense: DEPENDING ON IF COMIC STRIP IS: DAILY WEEKLY MONTHLY
NATURE OF JOB for Children’s BOOK! • Can be stressful to find a publisher, to publish a book. • Having a literary agent to help you get funding to promote book as well as find a publisher is a good idea. • When the book is a success, it maybe hard to top it, and you may lose popularity.
Salary for Newspaper Artists • The Salary of a newspaper cartoonist. The salary can go from $600 to $1500 a week.
Salary of Children’s Author/Artists. DEPENDS ON HOW SUCCESSFUL THE BOOK IS!!
