Today is Evidence that We are changing the Culture at UAB: • Articulate the definitions and understand the difference between evidence based nursing practice, quality improvement and research • Understand the different processes of EBP, QI, and Research • Give examples of sources of evidence utilized in my practice • Practice nursing based on evidence • Present and publish my evidence based practice and research results
Most frequent question Today is about answering the question: Am I doing a research, evidence based practice or a QI project??
Evidence Based Practice • An active process in which health care providers make clinical decisions that incorporate • a search for the best and latest evidence • clinical expertise and assessment • patient preference and values Sackett, Straus, Richardson, Rosenberg & Haynes, 2000 Porter-O’Grady, 2006
Quality Improvement • Quality, clinical or performance improvement focuses on systems, processes, and functional, clinical, satisfaction, and cost outcomes • QI projects may contribute to understanding best practice or processes of care in which nurses are involved
Nursing Research • Nursing research involves the systematic inquiry specifically designed to develop, refine, and extend nursing knowledge • The intent of nursing research is to answer questions and develop knowledge using a scientific method such as quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods.
EBNP vs. Research vs. QI • Distinct Definitions • Distinct Processes • Integral parts of translation of best evidence into practice
EBNP vs. Research vs. QI • EBNP is the translation of existing research • Research is the generation of new knowledge • QI is looking at systematic processes to eliminate error
EBNP vs. Research vs. QI • Research generates evidence! • EBP translates evidence! • QI incorporates evidence!
Discussion • Sheila Ray Montgomery: Evidence Based Practice • Faye Williams: Quality Improvement • Connie White-Williams: Research
Historical Evolution • It began with Florence Nightingale.
