  2. SPONGE • In your Grammar for Writingworkbook, complete page 154, Exercise B. • You have 5 minutes to complete this task. • When you finish, gently tear out the page to turn in. • Put your GfW worksheets into 1 pile at your table.

EQ: Why should I practice my skills? • Standards: • ELACC8RI4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative and technical meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.. • ELACC8RL1: Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. • ELACC8RL4:Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone). • ELACC8W1: Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. • ELACC8W10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. • ELACC8L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. • Explain the function of verbals (gerunds, participles, infinitives) in general and their function in particular sentences. • ELACC8L6: Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

  4. ACTIVaTOR • Question and Answer session: • Any questions about DRAPES?

  5. Pull out a sheet of notebook paper. • Write your Name, Date, and Class Period in the top, right-hand corner. WORK PERIOD • SECTION #1: • Write the meaning for each letter in DRAPES. You have 10 minutes.

  6. Section 3 • Write a 1 paragraph BCR responding to one of the three topics below. • Should large companies be required to hire a certain number of minorities? • Should children who commit violent crimes be tried as adults? • Should the government be allowed to detain suspected terrorists without trial? • Then, beneath your BCR, write our the letters DRAPES from top to bottom, and write an example for each of the letters in DRAPES that you could use to beef up your BCR.

  7. CLOSING • Author’s Chair: • A random selection of students will present their BCRs in class.

  8. HOMEWORK • No homework! • Have a great weekend!!!
