There are three categories of labels for textiles products: Information labels Care labels Safety instructions
Information Labels • Information labels, as the name suggests, provide the information required by a consumer when selecting the most appropriate object for their needs. • The information label has on it: • The logo of the company that produced the object • The size of the object • The fibre content of the object • The country where the object was made
Care Labels • A care label provides the information required for the correct laundering of an object. A care label is based on the type of fibre or fibres used in the garment and the way the fibres have been produced. For example, many knitted items and some woollen objects cannot be washed, so require dry cleaning. • The information included on a care label would include • Washing instructions • Bleaching instructions • Drying instructions • Ironing instructions • Dry-cleaning instructions
International Labelling System International labeling symbols allow consumers to understand the care required for textiles products even if the object has been produced in another country with another language used on the label. These symbols may vary slightly depending on the specific care requirements of the individual object
Safety Instructions Safety instructions provide information regarding how safe a textiles product is for children to wear. The most important safety instruction is the flammability of fibres used in children’s nightwear and the design style of the nightgown or pyjamas
Swing Labels Labels cannot be attached to some objects, because the textile item does not have an appropriate place to put a permanent label. For these items, for example socks, the manufacturer provides a label in the form of a swing tag. A swing tag is a loose tag, usually on string, that provides the necessary information and care labelling required for the consumer.
