1-Benefits • Ensure workers’ protection in all sectors • Common understanding of chemical hazards communication • Environmental protection Example: Industrial workplace -Safe handling of chemicals by workers (OSH) Transport -Expedite transfer
2-Existing Instructions /Structures • NGOs networks: • Pesticide action network • ANGOC-Asian NGO network for Communities • ALNI-Asian Labor Network on International Financial Institutions • CI-ROAP-Consumers International Region of Asia Pacific • SUSWATCH-Sustainable Development Watch • Issues: • need to impart information to networks about: • GHS • ASEAN activities relevant to GHS • determine awareness of networks on GHS
3-ACTIVITIES • Identify existing networks • ex. regional network for agriculture, labor etc. • decide on representatives • Establish regional networks or build GHS capacity for existing networks • through the government, IFCS • press releases • Initiate survey to determine awareness, existing activities, willingness of networks • Participating countries to involve civil society interest and participation
3-Mobilization of resources Examples from: • Industrial companies ( National , and/or regional, and transnational) • Foundations • ASEAN • APEC • Cooperating government agencies • Croplife • JETRO/JICA etc...
3-How? • Send proposals for projects • UNITAR facilitation (Subject to funding from donors) • INFOCAP (Information Exchange Network on Capacity Building for the Sound Management of Chemicals) Issues: • Specific resources for specific sectors • Prioritize more toxic chemicals • Role of media and advertising
4- Contribution to regional GHS implementation strategy development • Membership in the national steering committee • Commitment and cooperation • Participation in ASEAN meetings • Civil society will choose focal points • Participation in regional trainings/workshops • Regional meeting/workshop of civil society
