Legally separate entity
Able to accept tax-deductible contributions
The SHRM Foundation is affiliated with SHRM, but is a legally separate entity with separate, dedicated staff and a separate budget.
The Foundation is a charitable organization. SHRM does provide some financial support, mainly in the form of overhead (building and equipment) and staff support (Accounting, IT, HR), however the majority of the Foundation’s annual budget comes directly from donations- so your support is critical.

46. Friday, September 07, 2012 Why “Research-based” Knowledge? Research shows which methods work
Builds HR’s credibility
Adds value to your organization
Helps you speak the language of business Why is “research-based” important?
Well, have you ever tried to sell a new program to your CEO and he or she asked “where’s the data showing this will work?” or “What’s the return on investment (ROI)?”
The Foundation is funding research so that you will have hard data to back up your proposals. Research shows that effective HR practices really do have a positive impact on an organization’s bottom-line. Using this data, or “research-based knowledge” helps you to build credibility in your organization.

New Report on Selection Techniques Here are some of the products the Foundation has produced:
The SHRM Foundation has created a new series entitled Effective Practice Guidelines to help make research-based knowledge more accessible to HR practitioners. Here is the series concept: A subject matter expert with both research and practitioner experience is selected to prepare the guidelines. The author distills all relevant research findings and expert opinion into specific advice on how to conduct effective HR practice.
The first report in the series was written by Elaine Pulakos and covers Performance Management. Free copies of this report were distributed at the 2004 Leadership Conference and are available free on the SHRM Foundation website.
A new report on Assessment Methods for Selecting Employees will be released in the fall of 2005.

52. Friday, September 07, 2012 You may have heard about the Foundation/Towers Perrin research/book:Making Mergers Work: The Strategic Importance of People .
This book was published as a result of a Foundation-funded research project on the role of HR in mergers and acquisitions. A large number of M&A’s fail- often due to ‘people’ issues such as culture clashes or loss of key talent. The definitive finding in the Foundation’s research was that companies that involved their HR leaders early in the M&A process were more likely to have a successful merger than those that didn’t. This is clear empirical evidence of the importance of HR.
The book provides a practical roadmap on how HR can add value at every stage of the M&A process.
It has received terrific reviews, even from outside the profession. For example, the influential Financial Executive magazine (for CFO’s) calls it “meaty, deep, and probing- a valuable addition to the M&A literature”.
At some point, many of you will probably be involved in a merger or acquisition, if you haven’t been already. When you are, be sure to get a copy of this book. It will help you add value throughout the process. You may have heard about the Foundation/Towers Perrin research/book:Making Mergers Work: The Strategic Importance of People .

53. Friday, September 07, 2012 HR Academic Program Directories Two online directories
Masters degree programs
Undergraduate HR programs
Free access for SHRM members
Another project that the Foundation pioneered is creating the first-ever comprehensive guide to masters degree programs in HR and related fields. There are numerous directories of MBA programs and law schools, but a published directory of HR programs did not exist.
The SHRM Foundation stepped in to fill this need The first edition, profiling 79 programs, was published in 2000. The second edition was published in 2002 and contained 114 masters degree programs. In 2003, it was converted to an online product so it could be continuously updated.
The directory is now a searchable online database. It is available FREE to SHRM members at www.shrm.org/foundation/directory.
In 2004, the Foundation compiled a similar directory of undergraduate programs in HR. This online directory now profiles more than 260 degree programs and is open to the general public.
The directories may be accessed from the SHRM Foundation website at www.shrm.org/foundation.

SHRM Masters Series $25,000
Collegiate HR Games $36,000
Student Scholarships $13,000 Another tangible example of the Foundation’s work is its annual support of scholarships and education. In 2005, we received over 251 applications. Because of the program’s success, the Foundation Board recently approved an increase in funding. In 2006, the Foundation will award a total of $50,000, $10,000 per region, in scholarships.

The HR Games brings together teams of college students to compete in a Jeopardy-style match answering HR questions. There are competitions at the state level with a national championship held each year at the SHRM Annual Conference in June. Micky Candia, a former student team member from the Univ. of Texas, San Antonio called the HR Games “one of the most rewarding experiences” of her undergraduate career.
