Interpret This: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Jesus
The Mission of all believers: “Make an impact on our secular societywith the gospel of Jesus Christ” Question: How can we do that if we don’t master the instruction Book?
The approach is called Inductive “Inductive” describes reasoning which - starts with the basic facts - works to the conclusion Or, “don’t form our conclusions until we have examined the facts”
Inductive Bible Study is Systematic Observation - What does it say? Correlation - How does it relate? Interpretation - What does it mean? Application - What does it mean to me?
The most important tool for Bible study is: Why? If you do not write things down, you will never make significant progress in Bible study!
The following are from Lesson 2 Remember to take a look at these slides in the “Notes” view. You will see an example of the built-in help for your presentation
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable -forteaching, -forreproof, -forcorrection, -fortraining in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work (2 Tim 3:16-17)
Observation - What to Look For • Key words - including Repetition • Markers - therefore, then, etc • Contrast • Conditional statements • Relative time of action • Figures of speech - think about meaning • Verbs - including Tense • Questions you have
p. 23 32
Correlation - Getting Started Review your Observations - select what seems important (key words, perhaps) 1. Think of cross-references you know 2. Use your Bible’s margin cross-references
Approach to Interpretation Literal - take the words at face value, that is, in their usual or ordinary sense Historical - understand the setting and culture of the author Grammatical - meaning is drawn from grammatical use and context Our goal is to discover the original meaning intended by the author.
Application - Getting Started 1. Review your Observations,Correlations, andInterpretation general statements 2. Think of examples of application • Positive or negative • Biblical or outside the Bible 3. Make your personal applications specific and actionable if possible 4. Pray - this is spiritual warfare!
What about Reference Materials?? 1. Do your own study first!! 2. Go with specific questions 3. Use references to • check your understanding • prompt more observations • provide supplemental information
Dealing with Bible Difficulties • Do not let a difficulty shake your faith – God has an adequate explanation, even if you haven’t found it yet • Remember the basics – review the context with this issue in mind. • Seek help from correlation passages which are clear – NEVER use a fuzzy passage to interpret a clear one. • Check the Bible Knowledge Commentary • Ask a knowledgeable believer • If the difficulty persists, follow the more formal written approach defined in the text.
