PRONOUNS PRONOUNS REPLACE NOUNS • When you write, you often refer to a name(noun) a number of times in a single sentence. • Repeating the name(noun) makes the sentence awkward or repetitive. • Let’s look at the following example:
EXAMPLE 1 : NO PRONOUNS Jack went to Jack’scloset and took out Jack's new suit becauseJackwas going to a dance held by Jack’s company. In this sentence, the NOUN “Jack” is stated five times. This awkward repetition of the word Jack and Jack’s could be avoided by using another part of speech for these words. You guessed right “PRONOUNS”
EXAMPLE 2 : PRONOUNS Jack went to his closet and took out his new suit because he was going to a dance held by his company. The pronouns “his” and “he” are used in the place of the noun. They replace the repeated nouns in sentence and make the sentence more pleasant to read.
The PRONOUN refers to a person, place, thing, feeling, or quality but does not refer to it by its name.
