  1. 600 Hours Update  The Early Learning and Childcare Parent/Carer Survey has been open until Friday 24 January. Responses are still being returned at the moment. Full analysis will be starting next week. Here is a short summary of responses. 1727 RESPONSES SO FAR

  2. Q1 Would you use an extra 125 hours of early learning and childcare each year? Yes - 91.49% NO – 2.66%

  3. Q2 What model of hours would suit you best? 1st- 3 hours and 10 minutes each day M-F term time only – 43.73% 2nd- 2x8 hour days term time only - 29.21% 3rd- 3 hours each day M-F + 2 weeks of the school holidays - 20.12%

  4. Q4 If different nurseries were offering a range of the above, would you travel to get the right provision for your child? • Within the same part of the city- 84.55% • Different part of the city- 12.78%

  5. Information on respondents completing the Survey Their children: 50.4%- children under 3 years 74.44%- children between -3-5 years 31.93%- children at primary school 3%- children at secondary school 1.15%- children have left school

  6. Their status: 87.02% - female 12.98%- male Of which: • Employed full time: 31.43% • Employed part time: 45.48% • Not in paid employment: 20.99% • Student: 3.38%

  8. Discussion point 1: In the survey the most popular option was for the extended session and not  2 eight hour days.  Next year we will have to look at how we can develop this more flexible delivery.How do you suggest that this could be provided?

  9. 600 hours Early Learning and Childcare Testing Implementation of Additional Session Times Aim By the end of January 2014 we will gather information from five nursery classes to help us better understand and address the challenges of delivering the 600 hours entitlement to early learning and childcare

It helped me have enough time to prepare their meals before they come home.” “He enjoyed his extra time and seemed to have more stories to me about his day.” “Great!! What a difference an extra 30 minutes makes.” “ The additional time is a good idea but I prefer if it could be at the end (of the morning).”

Parent Views “I think it will be useful to have an extra 40 minutes childcare per day...I can see this being quite difficult to implement.” “I have a daughter in school and it would make no sense to go home for 10 minutes then to have to return to pick up at nursery.” “I didn’t use the extra time as it means we have to wait in the cold for an extra 15 minutes for Daniels sister to go into school.” “ I would rearrange my classes in future if nursery hours were longer. A lot better longer.”

  33. Parent Views “She gets breakfast in our house with myself which I feel is important.” “Extra start time has been good for my child, but this start time was a bit close to primary start for it to make any difference to me.” “Couldn’t get them motivated and out the door earlier.”

  34. What the Children said. “I liked playing longer.” “I liked it because it was quiet” “I liked having more time to play.” “I was tired.”

  35. Issues to consider. • Nurseries with a small staff team e.g. 20/20 have less flexibility as all staff are required in the ratios at all times. • Many nurseries have surplus staff for part of the year. More effective use of this resource would address many of the challenges of providing the additional session time.

  36. Key Learning from uptake • All children starting and finishing at the same time is not popular with staff or parents. • A short timeframe between the morning session and afternoon session increases pressure on staff.

  42. Key Findings WhatWorked Well Being with the children longer meant we got more done. Felt we had more quality time with the children/less rushed. Team work. Relaxed atmosphere as no time pressure. Setting up with the kids. Children seemed calmer and enjoyed being more settled to do activities. Week 2 went much better

  43. Key Findings What was a challenge? Lack of time to meet with staff. Difficult to talk to parents. It’s impossible to do the paperwork, evaluate and discuss. Matching teacher contact hours to extended hours. Amount of time on the door. Long time manning the door as they straggled in. Not knowing who was arriving and pick up times

  44. Issues to consider. Some nurseries will need to review their tasks and reflect on how they use their existing resources e.g. ChallengeSolution Shopping for snack. Buy in bulk. Spending time on the door. Share expectations with parents. Tidying/Preparation. Involve the children in every day tasks. Seek advice from Early Learning and Childcare settings open for 52 weeks.
