  1. Chapter 4 Starting, Moving, and Stopping the Vehicle

  2. Starting the Engine • Check/set parking brake as appropriate • Place foot on brake pedal • Shift lever to Park or Neutral • Set choke if not Electronic Fuel Injection • Turn ignition to ON position • Check Gauges • Adjust Heating/Ventilation/Air-Conditioning

  3. Starting the Engine • Set accessories, as appropriate • Turn on headlights if no Daytime Running Lights • Allow 15 to 20 seconds engine warm up

  4. Entering the Roadway • Press firmly on brake pedal • Shift to appropriate gear • Forward • Reverse • Signal as appropriate • With foot on brake, release parking brake • Select appropriate gap in traffic flow

  5. Entering the Roadway • Steer to lane • Target lane position • Release pressure on brake pedal • Press accelerator gently • Steer to center of lane

  17. Securing the Vehicle • Apply pressure on brake pedal to stop vehicle in a legal parking space • Set parking brake • Shift gear selector to Park or Neutral (Manual transmission) • Close windows if appropriate
