Islam is Revealed to Muhammad • Muhammad often retreated to a cave to meditate • Muslims believe that he was visited by the Angel Gabriel and Islam was revealed to him • Gabriel visited Muhammad many times during his life revealing the message of Islam which was later written in the Muslim Holy Text the Qur’an
Muhammad’s Message • Islam is a monotheistic religion, this means that it its followers believe in only one God • Muslims use the Arabic word for God – Allah • Muslims pray to the same God as Christians and Jews What three symbols are in this picture?
Opposition to Muhammad • Some citizens of Mecca converted to Islam, but many people opposed him • People feared losing wealth & respect as keepers of the Ka’aba and began persecuting (punishing) Muslims • Muhammad and his followers fled the city to Medina Arabs believed that Abraham built the Ka’aba at a spot where a meteorite fell. The stone is still there today. Since then it has been a religious shrine for many different religions.
The Hijra • Muhammad continued preaching in Medina • He became the political and religious leader of Medina. • The Muslims of Medina fought the Meccans • After several victories Muhammad defeated his opposition
Muhammad Returns to Mecca • Muhammad takes control of Mecca and sets up an Islamic society there. • He goes to the Ka’aba and smashes the idols symbolically replacing the old religion with Islam The Ka’aba today
