The End of Student Apathy Mitch Lynch The Power of ICU
Garretson High School • End of the year meeting • Largest issue with students was not behaviors…it was their lack of effort, preparation, and quality of work. • Apathy • absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement. • lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting
A Paradigm Shift • As a staff we looked into having extra study halls, time before or after school, etc. • Each came back to the students holding the power of how the work would be made up and at what speed • Our principal sent out email to neighboring schools and one of them mentioned the ICU program
Accountability • Every teacher will know what every student owes by referring to the ICU database
Discussion • Does your school district have any curriculum strategies in place to help combat apathy? • Do you believe apathy has become more or less prevalent over the past 10 years? • As an educator, if a student repeatedly shows apathy towards their education, how responsible do you feel if they fail?
