Riots and Earthquakes. Something’s brewing….
The Earthquake. When? Seneca dates it to AD 63 Tacitus dates it to AD 62 Huh?!! Noooooooooooooooooo
February 5 AD 62? Seneca Natural Questions: • Lasted several days. Inflicted ‘great devastation’. • Many people have ‘denounced Campania’ and ‘have emigrated after this misfortune and say that they will never go there again’. • Tacitus, Annals 15.22 ‘And the busy town of Pompeii in Campania largely collapsed because of an earthquake…’
OCR p106 • Why was there seismic activity at Pompeii? • What damage did the earthquake do to Pompeii? • What opportunity did it give Pompeians to change their city? • Where was some of the most important renovation work being carried out?
Temple of Jupiter Arch City wall Castellum aquae Vesuvius gate.
Big Problems • Water supply system broken? Water pipes on Via dell’Abbondanza being replaced. • Many fountains in private houses closed. • Many buildings being restored – e.g. the colonnade of the forum. The Macellum, Comitium, Basilica all repaired. • Odeon and Theatre appear to be closed. • Temple of Apollo: Cracks in walls ‘stitched’ by brick or rubble. • Only 1 public bath operational. • Too much damage for a 17 year old earthquake?
Constant problems? • Regular tremors precede most volcanoes. • Water pipes being replaced in AD 79. Must have been repaired quickly after AD 63, but damaged again. Burying them deeper to make them stronger? • Repairs in Suburban Baths repaired again. • Changes to occupation: several properties merged into one house or converted into businesses. People have left? BUT: Many upstairs rooms being constructed for apartments = housing shortage?
Numerius Popidius Celsinus, son of Numerius, rebuilt at his own expense from its foundations the Temple of Isis, which had collapsed in an earthquake; because of his generosity, although he was only 6 years old, the town councillors nominated him into their number free of charge.
