REVISION TIP! GCSE BITESIZE – VIDEO SUMMARIES.... FUNNY AND EDUCATIONAL!
Causes of war - Balkans • M - Militarism • A – Alliance system • I – Imperialism • N – Nationalism Nationalism – desire of a country to independently rule themselves.
The Balkans = TENSION • Originally controlled by Turkey – Ottoman empire in decline by 1900. • Austro-Hungarian empire wants to take control of Balkans. • Russia looks out for the Slavic people as a ‘big brother’
Young Turks - 1908 • Turkey experiencing revolution – A-H took opportunity to annex Bosnia. • Most people living in Bosnia were Serbian so were unhappy. • Serbia turned to Russia for help but Germany also waded in and threatened war which made Russia back down. HELP US?!
Balkan League 1912 • Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria and Montenegro joined forces and drove the Turks out. • Serbia doubled in size as a result = confidence. • 2nd Balkan war – June 1913 • Bulgaria attacks Serbia and Greece. Again Serbia gains strength and land.
Sarajevo Assassination • Black hand gang (Serbian) – murder A-H heir in Sarajevo, Bosnia which had been annexed by A-H. Serbia were angry at this and wanted independence for Bosnia and for the Serbians there to unite with Serbia.
Effects of war – Home Front (immediate) • Anti-German feeling – German businesses attacked, German shepherds kicked • Persuasive recruitment campaign to encourage young, fit men to join up • White feathers given out for cowardice • Aerial bombardment around the coast e.g. Scarborough
Effects of war – Western Front • Corpse rats (size of rabbits) fed on dead bodies and spread disease • Lice on soldiers/caught in kilt seams, flies because of corpses • Smell of rotting flesh • Lack of washing facilities/unsanitary latrines • Lack of clean water supply • Deep mud – trenchfoot • Risk of death from snipers/going over the top • Monotonous food, sometimes contaminated • Risk of shell shock from unrelenting bombardment • Risk of injury from barbed wire/repairing trenches • Exhaustion • Horrific sights – seeing friends die
ToV - Difficulties Had to negotiate: • Clemenceau’s desire for revenge • Wilson’s desire for lasting peace and fairness • General feeling of anger towards Germany as the guilty party • Many lost loved ones and wanted retribution • Scale of destruction – massive rebuilding programme needed and refugees had to be re-homed
LoN - Difficulties • Not all nations were allowed to be members • Russia not permitted/USA refused membership despite it being their idea • League had no army to help settle disputes
