The EPA Needs Your Help! The EPA has limits on the acceptable amounts of contaminants in our water systems, but due to budget cuts they have fallen behind in testing your local waters. Collect water samples from three different sources. Using the water quality testing kits provided, analyze the samples for the presence of bacteria, chlorine, nitrogen, copper and iron. Using the same methods you used to determine parts per million of money and time, convert the levels of contaminants to parts per million.
Research the EPA limits on these contaminants. • How do the levels you found compare? • Are any of your local water bodies imperiled? • What potential impacts could these contaminants have on ecosystem health? Human health? • What human actions could contribute to increased levels of these contaminants? • Write a report to the EPA documenting your results and outlining a plan of attack to improve or maintain the current state of the system.
(Hints) Parts Per Million (PPM) is the mass of a contaminant per unit volume of water. This is written as milligrams of a solute per liter of a solution (mg/L) 1 mg/L = 1 ppm
