  2. Why detoxify? To lose weight Prepare for surgery Religious reasons Revive the body of toxins It is thought to be a way to recharge, revitalize and renew your body in a healthy manner. The use of body cleansing has powerful psychological, religious and spiritual meaning

  3. Is fasting necessary? • Our bodies naturally detoxify.  • Environmental toxins, pollutants, chemicals and other synthetic substances lead many to believe that the average body can not handle it.  • When the body cannot rid itself of toxins they are stored outside of the regular elimination system • Linda Page, ND, PhD

  4. Preoperative cleansers • Oral sodium picosulfate/magnesium citrate • Preparation for surgery, x-ray, or endoscopic examination.  • Osmotic laxative • Reduces body weight

  5. Colon cleansing • Became popular in the U.S. in the 1920’s-1930 • The trend is coming back again in forms such as teas, enzymes, or colon irrigation • Enemas, laxatives, strong herbal teas enzymes, powders, and antiparasite capsules • Autointoxication or mucus build up in the colon • So the question is, is colon cleansing really help the theory of cleaning the mucus buildup? • Can our own body do that work without a cleanser to help it? • Colon cleanser have side effects so why use them?

  6. Juice fasting • One of the most widely used body cleansers • Involves the short term intake of fruit and vegetable juice and water only • How does it work? • Ketosis • There are many benefits and hazards to fasting, most of it depends on the person.   

  7. Fasting vs. dieting • Big difference! • Why doesn’t fasting work to lose weight healthily?   • James Dillard MD states that fasting for weight loss acts as a yo-yo effect. 

  8. Water only fasting • Ketosis •  As Dillard states this is not because toxins are coming out it is that you are going into ketosis.  •  Ketones • The theory behind a veggie juice fast is that the antioxidants in the juice give the toxins something to bind to, acting as a sort of toxin neutralizer. • Detoxification

  9. Who should not fast? • It should be mentioned that fasting of any kind should not be taken lightly. • People who should refrain from fasting include: pregnant or nursing woman children or adolescents underweight or debilitated peoples people suffering from anemia the elderly, and also people with diabetes heart disease kidney or liver disease chronic health problems
