Our businesses include supermarkets, department stores to a full service auto business and hotels. We are located in metropolitan, regional and remote areas. Our workplaces and operations vary in size, volume, technology and skill requirements. We stock over 150,000 items, work with 20,000 suppliers and serve 1.2 million customers per week. In financial year 2003 Coles Myer achieved 27 billion $ in sales. We employ fulltime, part-time and casual employees. Many of our businesses have seasonal peaks that require different workplace planning and skill requirements. ……..We are a large and diverse business. To support the achievement of this Coles Myer has a well established partnership with Deakin University. Deakin provide a range of services and programs to Coles Myer providing employees with extended learning opportunities throughout their working life via Post graduate programs specifically customised for business identified needs. Career Path Commence as a School Based New Apprentice (Certificate II in Retail Operations) Certificate III in Retail Supervision Certificate IV in Retail Management Diploma of Business Graduate Certificate of Management Graduate Diploma of Management Masters of Business Administration Retail offers a large range of opportunities for people who are interested in a career in retailing. Traditionally retail has been seen as part time/casual work while studying. This still may be the case for some people, but retail has a lot to offer. As Career Teachers you are in a position to promote the benefits and opportunities which exist. Coles Myer has numerous positions number of areas of the business. From the store level to National Office. Highlighted here are the qualifications available both in the VET sector and Higher Education. A number of our key executives started in the business collecting trolleys on a part time basis.     8. Why are we involved? Provides an opportunity for young people to enter the business and continue their secondary education young people to train in all aspects of a retail environment alternative pathway for young people instead of university/TAFE Credible pathway As an enterprise RTO we deliver retail specific programs which are core to our business. In areas of our business where we have specialised skill development needs (such as tyrefitting KTAS) we obviously leave this to the experts and work with TAFE to meet skill development in these specific areas. With over 2000 worksites and 165,000 plus employees managing mutliple TAFEs and Providers across the nation is quite a task. As a national organisation with multiple businesses providing a consistent development framework is essential. Identifying a single TAFE or private provider to meet our VET training needs has not been possible. TAFE and private providers are not national but state based. Many only have the reach of certain regions or localities. It is inefficient and has proven ineffective to manage / partner with multiple providers (whether they be TAFE or Private Provider) to meet the training needs of the business. The size of the organisation requires a centralised solution and there has no been a provider in the market to meet our identified needs. Coles Myer are an enterprise specific Registered Training Organisation as it enables the organisation to effectively provide consistent development opportunities for employees nationally. As an enterprise RTO we deliver retail specific programs which are core to our business. The national training packages and the Australian Quality Training Framework are strong features of our national training system that provide a solid foundation for the Australian VET sector. This results in variations of national guidelines and when operating on a national scale this can mean administering the same thing in 7 different ways. Quality control. Ability to manage the standard of program delivered and assessments conducted to ensure, currency, relevance and fit for the target audience. Responsive to audience needs eg;. Trainers – Professional Development Our trainers receive ongoing development to ensure they maintain and develop both their training and retail skills. Flexibility Ability to meet the needs of all employees not matter where they are located. Learning can be on the job, in a classroom, by distance or via a blended approach. Contextualisation / Customisation Programs contextualised / customised specific to the Coles Myer environment. This supports the learner to transfer their learning to their workplace.
