  2. Course Description • English Honors is designed to enrich vocabulary, strengthen reading skills, and enhance the writing process. • The curriculum will deepen analytical reading and comprehension skills. Socratic seminars are used to foster oral language and class discussions.

  3. Course Description • The course curriculum is driven by the McDougal Littell Literature book and quarterly novels from various literary genres. • All novels can be found online at www.pagebypagebooks.comor will be provided to the student. • 9th Grade in-class novels are: The House on Mango Street, Siddhartha, Fahrenheit 451, and Romeo and Juliet. • Membean is an online program to help students build a robust vocabulary.

  4. Course Guidelines • This course incorporates the recommendations for effective reading instruction presented by The National Reading Panel: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language. • This course will also follow the guidelines set by the Miami Dade County 2014-2015, K-12 Comprehensive Reading Based Reading Planand the Florida State Standards.

  5. Supplies • Students are encouraged to create a folder titled English Honors on their laptops but are required to maintain a traditional binder labeled English Honors with five labeled tabs. • A flash drive is required to save projects completed on the computer. • Pencils/pens and paper are required for when we use them in-class. • All students must have a book to read during silent sustained reading. This book is NOT the same as the in-class novel reading selection.

  6. Home Learning • Students are required to read a novel for a minimum of 30 minutes on a daily basis. • Students are encouraged to practice vocabulary on Membean for 10 minutes. • Reading Plus is due every Sunday for a grade. • Students are encouraged to practice typing skills via typingweb. This will help students with the upcoming formal state assessment and college readiness.

  7. Grading • A minimum of two grades per week are required. • No late assignments are accepted unless a student is absent. • Please log on the Parent Portal tomanage your child’s grades. • Class work and home learning are worth one letter grade. Vocabulary Test are worth two letter grades. Projects and Essays will be graded using a rubric. Reading Plus is worth two letter grades.
