Developments /opportunities to be aware of : Accolades 2012/13 • Nominations for this year's Accolades are now open on the and will close on Thursday 6 September 2012. • Achieving an Accolade proves you are improving the lives of people using social care services through workforce development. National Minimum Standards and Code of Conduct consultation • Have your say on the development of the minimum training standards and code of conduct for healthcare support workers and adult social care workers in England • Skills for Health and Skills for Care are currently in discussions with the Department of Health regarding an extension to the consultation period: currently due to close 13.07.2012. • For more information see the briefing document below: • Minimum training standards and code of conduct for healthcare support workers and adult social care workers in England (pdf)

  4. Carers Week 2012: new resources • Guidance for employers and resources to support the learning and development of staff • Carers Matter - Everybodys Business - guidance to help employers and organisations support carers better through the learning and development of staff (refreshed version now available) • Carers in your Workforce Matter - guidance for employers which aims to raise the awareness of carers in the social care workforce, identifying what can be done to support them, retain their skills and prevent them having to leave the workforce • Dementia: workers & carers together - developed jointly by Skills for Care and Dementia UK this is a practical guidance for the social care workforce on supporting family and friends carers of people with dementia.

  5. National Occupational Standards (NOS) Project 2012/13 • Skills for Care along with other UK partners are currently supporting Skills for Care and Development in this project which has 2 elements: • To review the current NOS for Leadership and Management in Care Services (LMCS) • To develop NOS for Inspectors of Social Care Services • The project is working against tight timelines and must be complete by February 2013. NOS will be drafted within the month of August and redrafted and quality assured in October following the consultation phase. • They will then be submitted to UKCES for approval before the end of 2012.

Getting It Right From The Beginning: Common Induction Standards (CIS) All workers must complete the CIS but a good induction will: • Give workers confidence • Inspire them to continue in social care • Help workers identify with the organisation • Support workers to maintain required values, standards and practices • Influence approach to future learning • Prepare workers for the next step

  7. What induction should I give my staff? - Common Induction Standards Range of resources • Basic CIS and guidance freely available on website • Priced publications - £22 ‘ Starting out’ – workbook tool for learners ‘Supporting Starters’ - Guidance for managers

How can my staff be trained without being missing for long periods? • e:learning resources – use as individuals or together • In house training – DVDs / training packages /use expertise of own staff • Team / group discussions –reflections • Mentoring /shadowing • Collaboration with other local services

  33. Flexibilities of the new qualifications Many units can be used in 3 different ways • as optional units within the HSC Diplomas • within smaller specialist qualifications for CPD • individual units to develop learning in bite sized chunks and reflect business need

  34. The new Common Induction Standards (CIS) • The new CIS link perfectly to the core and mandatory units meaning that they can feed into the Diploma very easily • Any knowledge evidence gained can be used towards the Diploma which can be a real incentive for staff
