About Skills for Care • Skills for Care’s strategic role is to ensure that the adult social care workforce has the attitudes, values, skills and qualifications in the right place to deliver high quality social care. • We work closely with the 40,600 organisations that offer social care people who use services, carers and with other key stakeholders to develop tools and resources that meet the workforce development needs of the sector, Skills for Care helps employers build the skills of 1.6 million workers and plan for the future.

  4. A framework for supporting personal assistants working in adult social care • Co-produced by Department of Health with national partner organisations, people who use services and their personal assistants. • Launched 27 July 2011 in Essex by Paul Burstow MP • Based on recent research

  5. Personal Assistants’ Framework • Delivery plan will be developed in coming months • Skills for Care to co-ordinate implementation of framework in partnership with direct employers and other partners

  6. Personal Assistants’ Framework Three broad aims • To support future growth of the personal assistant workforce and their employers • To address challenges to the development of personal assistant working; and • To share best practice examples

  7. Main areas of framework • Better understanding of personal assistant working • Support for employers during recruitment • Learning and development • Supporting personal assistants and employers • Enabling risk management

  10. New qualifications • Over the past year vocational qualifications have changed • Existing qualifications are still are valid • Workers can undertake more qualifications to enhance their skills • There is a new structure for the new qualifications

  12. New qualification headlines • Level 2/3 Diploma (replaces Level 2/3 NVQ) • Level 5 Diploma in management (replaces various Level 4 qualifications) • Can study towards individual units • Shorter Awards and Certificates available in a variety of subject areas
